Samsung's 8500 series TV's add a more sophisticated implementation of LED technology, 'Local Dimming', which replaces the 'Edge' type technology of the 8000 series.
The 8500 series boasts a claimed 7,000,000: 1 contrast ratio along with a 2ms response time, Auto Motion Plus frame interpolation which adds a 200Hz refresh rate and an Ultra Clear Panel that "works to improve image clarity and brightness regardless of a room's ambient lighting."
LED TVs use a technology which replaces the traditional always-on single bar-style fluorescent backlight present on the majority of LCD's with hundreds of Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs).
There are currently two types of LED lighting technology available to consumers, 'edge based' and 'local dimming'. As the name suggests, 'edge based' LED's are situated around the TV's frame rather than covering the whole pane. LED TV's using 'local dimming' light the entire rear of the screen, not just the perimeter, which allows various sections of the screen to be more precisely controlled.
The new 8500 Series also features Samsung's familiar suite of connectivity options. The Internet@TV - Content Service, developed in association with Yahoo!, provides onscreen access to popular web-based content from the likes of Flickr, Twitter, YouTube, and others. The widget based interface and scrollbar are activated with the push of a button on the TV's remote, running along the bottom of the screen for easy browsing .
There is DNLA compliance for wireless or wired connectivity through a network PC which enables streamed access to photos, music etc.
At just 1.6in deep and featuring Samsung's 'touch of colour' bezel, the 46in and 55in screens are sure to create a stunning addition to any living space. The new screens will arrive in the UK late summer. If you can't wait, Samsung's 8000 series LED TV's are available in the UK now.
